Rodolphe’s tips: the tips for an efficient backing up data

Computer data is currently the most hacked asset in the world! Indeed, we store a multitude of information on our computers, as holiday photos or administrative documents. A part of our life is entirely digitized. But what happens when a hacker hacks into your computer or when it becomes unusable? The data is lost. But there are many ways of backing them up. • First of all, make regular backups! Once a year is not enough. If you use your PC intensively, the ideal is to make one backup per week. This may seem restrictive but in the event of a breakdown, your recent files will not be lost.

 

• Secondly, it is essential to store them on different media: an external hard drive, a USB key or even Google Drive (you can refer to our previous article here). Rodolphe advises you to make regular copies of these data on a so-called “cold” medium. What is a “cold” media? It is a medium that is not connected to the Internet, such as an external hard drive for example.

 

• On the other hand, if you do not feel able to make regular backups or if this is too restrictive for you, there are other solutions. Indeed, there are small software programs that allow you to program a copy in a very simple and intuitive way. It is up to you to choose the periodicity of the backups, the ideal being once a week. Once configured correctly, all you have to do is plug in the backup media and the software takes care of the rest. Practical and efficient!

 

• Finally, these rules are important for personal use. Rodolphe gives an essential rule: 3-2-1! At least 3 copies of your data stored on 2 different media and 1 copy kept off-site for added security (fire, theft). In the professional context, data backup is essential.
